According to the National Weather Service, a band of heavier snow was setting up across eastern Montana this Friday, December 12, 2025, with snow totals reaching between eight and 12 inches. The flakes are accompanied by frigid air.
In Lewiston, Montana, for instance, the daily forecasted high temperature is 12 degrees Fahrenheit. The wind chill could dip as low as five below.
Further east, the local National Weather Service office in Indiana reported between a half inch and six inches of snow accumulation across the state Friday morning, and more snow is coming. A Winter Weather Advisory for the state’s capital, Indianapolis, kicks in on Saturday. As much as five inches of snow is expected starting at 11 a.m., per the advisory.
West Virginia is getting ready for more snow, too, with weekend snow totals of between four and eight inches in the northern part of the state.
While Ohio or Indiana skiers will appreciate the weather at their local hills, much of ski country is devoid of flakes for now.
States like California, Wyoming, Washington, and Colorado are without National Weather Service warnings—at least those that signal cold weather and snow. The West Coast, in particular, needs more snow for the ski season to start, with mountains from California to Oregon and Washington pushing back their opening dates.
Still, some ski areas are benefiting. Since opening, West Virginia’s Snowshoe Mountain has picked up two feet of snow.
“It's FOMO Friday, riders! If you're not mountain-bound this morning, you should be,” the mountain teased in a recent update. “We're sitting on a bundle of fresh snow.”
