Skiers Go Huge With Doubles and Triples in Wild NZ Session

It's no secret that some of the best freeriders around hail from New Zealand. Whether it's something in the water or merely a coincidence, the tiny country just can't seem to stop producing incredible athletes.

While some ski areas in New Zealand have had a bit of a rough go this winter and have been unable to open due to conditions, others are thriving, and a recent storm has only helped. Treble Cone, which is just up the road from Wānaka on New Zealand's south island, received 12cm of fresh snow over the last week, which was apparently the perfect amount to open up some features near the mountain's summit.

The Backcountry Invitational's inaugural New Zealand test event took place earlier this week and brought an incredible roster of freeriders to the area. Prior to the competition, several of the athletes competing in the event and others had a little warm-up session on the mountain's summit rocks. As you'd expect, it was unreal, and because we can't quite do it justice with words, here are a few of the best clips from it.

Here's Ross Tester throwing down.

A few hits from Tester's fellow FWT competitors, Toby Rafford and NZ local, Ben Richards (anyone else still thinking about Ben Richard's front flip from last season?).

Here's one from Jess Hotter sending a massive backflip.

And last but not least, 15-year-old Jasper Rogers sending a triple backflip. Spoiler: He doesn't land it, but we love the send anyway.

With the exception of Jasper, all these folks competed at the Backcountry Invitational following this session, where Jess Hotter ended up taking third in the women's category.

Starting next week, the Jossi Wells Invitational will also take place at Treble Cone, as well as the New Zealand Freestyle Nationals. Treble Cone is slated to close for the season on September 28, so here's to getting after it as long as you can in the southern hemisphere and hopefully seeing more bonkers clips like these before the end of the season.
