For the most part, June skiing is reserved for high-altitude ski resorts across the West. But Hyland Hills, Minnesota, is bucking that trend.
Thanks to a pile of preserved snow, the ski area is hosting a backyard-style rail jam on June 11 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., continuing its spring skiing tradition.
The jam itself, which was capped at 100 participants, has already sold out. But spectating is encouraged, and Hyland Hills is hosting a happy hour on its patio with food, drinks, and a live DJ to keep the vibes high.
The only thing as good as skiing is watching other people ski, so if you’re in the neighborhood, we recommend moseying over to Hyland Hills to partake in some late-season action from the sidelines.

Hyland Hills’ preserved snow jam won’t be the only unconventional ski offering this summer and fall.
Jay Peak, Vermont, is hosting its own real snow rail jam, the Summer Solstice Sessions, on June 21, which also includes live music and skateboarding features.
Trollhaugen, Wisconsin, has its own snow stash, too, with plans to unveil the winter season’s harvest in October for Open Haugen, a pre-season gathering and rail jam. And the summer hike park at Copper Mountain, Colorado, opened on June 6 for the season.
While these relatively modest piles of snow aren’t enough to, say, open a complete lift-serviced run, they can facilitate the completion of a noteworthy bucket list item, like hitting rails and skiing in mid June in Vermont.
In other parts of the world, though, snow storage has been pushed further. Levi, Finland, since 2016, has expanded its snow storage techniques to ensure early season coverage when fall arrives. In the summer of 2024, the ski resort reached a peak of 9,181,813 cubic feet of preserved snow.
Skiing with chairlifts will continue only a bit longer in North America.
Arapahoe Basin, Colorado, and Mammoth Mountain, California, have both declared plans to close up shop on June 15 (Arapahoe Basin will be open June 13 through June 15 before it closes). Timberline Lodge, Oregon, will remain open far beyond that, maintaining its status as skiing’s summertime mecca.
Finally, Beartooth Basin, Wyoming, the United States’ lone summer-only ski area, is, after being closed last summer, back in business for the time being and eyeing a tentative closing day of June 15.
