Many ski resorts hold an official pond skim event in which a makeshift pool of water is created in the snow for skiers to glide across, but at Snowbird, Utah, a naturally-forming pond steals the show.

Snowbird's last day of the Winter 24/25 season was held on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, 2025, and the scenes that unfolded at the unsanctioned pond skim on Anderson's (highlighted on the trail map in the hero image above) were as good as they get.

According to ski industry insider and former Snowbird Marketing Director Dave Amirault, this season's unsanctioned pond skim was the, "most chaotic" he's seen in it 10 years of attending the resort's closing day.

There are thousands of clips online from the pond skimming party, but the video below is the best compilation we've found thus far. Tap or click to watch roughly three minutes of pure pond skimming comedy. Video by Ihateyoufailtube.

Similar to Arapahoe Basin's aptly-named Lake Reveal, this naturally forming pond at Snowbird is the perfect place to throw an impromptu party on closing day. Just make sure you carry enough speed so you can join the party somewhat dry!

As the last resort open in Utah, skiers traveled from far and wide for one final day of lift-served skiing at Snowbird. Hannah Melinchuk, a former Dartmouth ski racer turned ski influencer originally from Alberta, and now a resident of Utah, gave the pond skim a go and recorded it for her following.

Melinchuk is arguably one of the best skiers on Instagram to glean tips from on form and technique, but she had never attempted a pond skim until this past Monday.

The unsanctioned pond at Snowbird has a near-perfect run-in for skimming. The approach is long and steep to build speed, and the transition from snow to water is relatively flat.

However, as we saw in the first video compilation, skiers and riders need to carry enough speed, lean back, and hold on tight to successfully make it across the pond without wiping out spectacularly.

On that note, let's take a look at a compilation video of the carnage that took place at Snowbird's pond skim. Flips, face plants, and big splashes galore! Tap or click below to watch the video. It's a real treat. Video shared to Instagram by Galen Carter.

The lift-served ski season is officially over in Utah, but don't fret! With the first day of June approaching, we're less than 170 days away from mid-November when some ski resorts begin opening for the season.

Pull out the flip-flops, cut off your sleeves, and add an extra ice cub to your drink. It's about to get hot in Utah, but the sweet relief of The Best Snow on Earth is just around the corner. You got this.
