In the winter, Alta Ski Area, Utah, is, perhaps above anything else, known for its snow. The ski resort stacks up powder like almost no one else, averaging about 550 inches each season. During one recent record-setting year, the snowfall total at Alta eclipsed 900 inches.

Keeping up with all the snow—and the droves of powder-hungry skiers—takes work. Every summer, as the slopes dry out, Alta gets busy, ensuring its lifts and ski runs are ready for the next, hopefully, record-breaking, winter. This summer, however, Alta is undergoing a long list of upgrades, improvements, and other changes.

This is what’s going on at the ski area this week and during the rest of the summer.

For skiers, the realignment of the Supreme chairlift may be the most noticeable change. Historically, the lift’s alignment had a unique, eight-degree bend. However, due to associated maintenance issues and a bumpy ride, Alta has opted to dismantle Supreme’s towers and make its alignment more straight.

That work is underway. On June 10, Alta removed Supreme’s lift towers, and as of June 5, the area around the chairlift was closed to travel. Alta anticipates that despite the makeover, Supreme will still be ready to ferry skiers up the slopes next winter.

Another project involves laying snowmaking lines along the Transfer Tow that connects Alta’s two base areas. This week, the lines are being staged in the south end of the Wildcat parking lot, and Alta asked visitors to only park in designated areas, watch out for heavy machinery, and avoid walking along the Transfer Tow while crews are at work.

In the Albion base area, work continues on the Albion Day Lodge expansion, which will add more restaurant seating, storage, public restrooms, and employee housing to the structure. At the north end of the Albion parking lot, Alta is also constructing a new storage facility that, once complete, will allow the ski area to stockpile equipment locally as opposed to using a warehouse on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley.

Through the duration of these projects during the summer and fall, Alta advised that the Albion base area’s parking will be, at times, limited. Further closures across Alta’s hiking trails are expected this summer. On June 5, the ski area shared that there was a temporary trail closure between Alf's Restaurant and the Cecret Lake Trailhead.

Details about construction closures at Alta this summer can be found on the ski area’s website here
