It’s time for the next FASE in bindings.
Rome made its Katana FASE binding available to purchase on its website on September 15, 2025.
The new fast-entry binding system already found its way to the Natural Selection Tour podium, as Ståle Sandbech was rocking them when he won the backcountry freeriding contest back in March.
FASE combines the comfort and secure-feeling of a traditional two-strap binding while speeding up the process. It’s an ingredient technology – think Vibram, or MIPS – that Erwin Knoester and Xavier Nidecker have been developing for the better part of seven years. It’s an alternative to Burton’s Step On program that is hoping to have a larger appeal with snowboarding’s core, who has largely been slow to adopt the new technology.
FASE bindings have a highback that pulls back, allowing for the rear entry of a binding, mimicking how the majority of people put on regular shoes. A lever will lock the highback into place, and a rider will be able to customize their ankle strap appropriately. The idea is it allows more appeal to riders across different styles and disciplines.
The new binding technology from Jones, Bataleon, and ThirtyTwo has also gone live on each individual brand’s websites. The bindings should start to pop up in your local shops any day now, if they aren’t already in stock.
By bringing the new technology to the Katana, riders will get an updated version of a binding that has been a staple in the Rome line for years. The Katana is built for taking speed and transferring it from edge-to-edge as fast as you can. The FullWrap Platform offers more lateral support than the Asym platform, and give the rider more power.
There are currently four versions of the Katana AW FASE binding for sale. The standard version retails for $410, and comes in three colors – black, slate, and team orange – while Ståle’s pro model will retail for $430.
