Daniel Levy has given Tottenham Hotspur the platform to go and win trophies

Many Tottenham fans are sitting on the fence and reserving their judgement on Daniel Levy after the Englishman announced his departure from N17. The former Spurs chairman ended his 24-year stint at the North London club earlier last week, and it is fair to say the journey was full of ups and downs. Not only that, but Levy also faced a lot of backlash from the fans throughout his tenure at the club.

It can be said that Daniel Levy prioritised the commercial side of football more than what actually mattered… results on the pitch. The Lilywhites managed to bring in numerous revenue streams during his tenure, and it made the North London club profitable and sustainable for a long time to come. Credit where its due, the Englishman really managed to make Spurs a financial giant in the footballing world.

However, prioritising the commercial side had its own cons. And that included the poor performances and results on the pitch. Spurs managed to win only two major trophies during his 24-year stint at N17. This just shows why fans were holding out protests against Levy. The Englishman never really knew how to run a football club, and his approach was more suited for a business venture instead.

Daniel Levy’s stint at Tottenham has received some mixed reviews

It is important to note that Tottenham were a mid-table Premier League club when Daniel Levy took over in 2001. But over the years, the Englishman managed to lead the Lilywhites higher up the table and compete for a Champions League spot regularly. By the end of his stint at N17, Levy left the North London club with a world-class stadium, regular Champions League football, and good talent across all levels.

Taking notice of that, ex-Spurs player Michael Dawson has heaped praise on Levy and his efforts to take the club forward. Speaking on Sky Sports (via X), Dawson said,

“Daniel Levy, when he went to Spurs in 2001, you look where he’s took this football club. They’re competing for Champions League, year after year being in it, plus the stadium. And yes, that doesn’t mean anything because you want to win trophies.”

The ex-Spurs player added,

“But has he left this football club in a better place? 100%. I worked with him personally, and people will reflect on what he’s done for the community, the club and the stadium. But it all comes down to winning trophies. That’s what the supporters want.”

Michael Dawson pointed out that Tottenham have managed to play Champions League football regularly in a world-class stadium, thanks to Daniel Levy. The ex-Spurs player believes that Levy has left the North London club in a better place after doing loads of work for the community over the years. However, Dawson believes that Levy failed to cross the final hurdle despite doing everything right, that is, winning trophies regularly.

Some may agree with Michael Dawson’s statement, and some may not. But it is fair to say that Daniel Levy did manage to make Tottenham a well-run club, with endless revenue streams, creating a platform for long-term success. In hindsight, the supporters will look at Levy’s tenure and might just wonder that it was not all that bad under his leadership.
