Tottenham suffered a massive setback just before the season began as James Maddison ruptured his ACL during a pre-season friendly in August. The England international was seen as a key part of Thomas Frank’s setup this season before being side-lined for the whole season. And the unfortunate timing of the incident did not give the Lilywhites enough time to find a replacement as well.
The North London club did end up signing Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig though as Maddison’s potential replacement for the season. But it is fair to say that the Dutchman is still finding his feet at N17 as he looks to make his mark under Thomas Frank. Despite his arrival, Spurs will still need to bring in a new #10 in the coming months as they do not have enough depth in that position.
Given how pivotal a playmaker is in Thomas Frank’s tactical system, reinforcing this position is essential if Tottenham hope to maintain their strong start to the new season. The recent appointment of Fabio Paratici as Sporting Director is expected to accelerate this process, with the Italian set to play a key role in identifying and pursuing suitable targets ahead of the January transfer window.
Tottenham need to be proactive in the January transfer window if they are to compete on all four fronts this season. The recent £100m investment from the Lewis family might come in handy for luring new players to N17 in the coming months, as the cash injection would give the Lilywhites leverage over other clubs for potential transfers. However, it remains to be seen whether the North London club utilises that money straightaway or not.
One of the main priorities for Spurs would be to bring in a #10 in January. The Lilywhites should look to target Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers for that position as he faces an uncertain future at Villa Park. The Lilywhites did try to land the England international in the summer after viewing him as an ideal replacement of James Maddison. However, a deal fell through and the 23-year-old opted to stay put for the time being.
If Thomas Frank wants to land him next year, then Tottenham would have to splash the cash for his signature. As per Matt Law (via The Telegraph),
“Aston Villa refused to entertain offers for Rogers this summer, but there remains a sense he is destined for a huge move in the next 12 to 24 months. He may have started the season slowly for his club, but Rogers has been in superb form for England and some big displays at next summer’s World Cup would push his price north of £100m.”
Rogers has been in sensational form for Aston Villa in recent months and has managed to make a name for himself under Unai Emery. So, it is only a matter of time before the 23-year-old finds himself at a big club whilst competing for major trophies regularly. Matt Law suggests that a deal to land the attacker, however, will prove to be difficult as he would be worth north of the £100m mark.
Spurs would have to break the bank to land Rogers if he does perform well in the World Cup next year. Signing a player of his calibre should be a no-brainer for the Lilywhites. But it is understandable if the North London club opt to look for other alternatives given his price tag. The 23-year-old still has a lot to prove before he can be considered a ‘£100m’ player.
