£34m Manchester United dream: Marquee name earmarked as Onana’s replacement

Manchester United have earmarked Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma as a replacement for Andre Onana, after securing forward Bryan Mbeumo. United have targeted the attacking department as the priority under Ruben Amorim, but other positions also need their attention afterwards.

Rest assured, Man United will provide the best possible squad to Amorim to compete next season in the Premier League. The Red Devils struggled immensely last season as the squad failed to adjust to Amorim’s demands, falling to 16^th position.

To make things worse, they lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur while archrivals Liverpool secured their 20^th title. Irrespective of the mitigating factor, the goalkeeping department remains a major concern that United faced since Onana’s arrival at United.

The Red Devils signed Onana from Inter Milan for £47.2m in the summer of 2023 as David De Gea’s replacement. However, the Cameroonian international has struggled to justify his signing, failing to succeed the legendary De Gea at the club.

United have boasted some legendary goalkeepers like Edwin van der Sar, Peter Schmeichel and De Gea in their recent history. With the expectation so high, Onana’s constant mistakes and failure to make easy saves created a psychological fear at United.

According to Metro, United want Paris SG goalkeeper Donnarumma as a replacement for Onana once they have signed Brentford’s Mbeumo. According to an Italian publication, La Repubblica, PSG have set a valuation of €40 million (£34m) for Donnarumma this summer.

The 26-year-old just finished a dream season with PSG after winning the Champions League competition and doing the historic treble. However, the Italian international has only one season left in his current contract, resulting in such a cheap transfer valuation.

At the same time, Donnarumma will boast a massive wage demand, which makes things complicated for United. The Red Devils are struggling with a financial issue of their own amid a squad overhaul under Amorim. Nevertheless, Donnarumma is the kind of marquee signing who could change the fortune of United with his quality and leadership in defence.
