There is no doubt that Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici have assembled a very exciting Tottenham Hotspur team for Thomas Frank to take into the fight for the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League titles.
This team’s capabilities were on full display as they beat Burnley with a 3-0 scoreline in their opening game of the 2025-26 Premier League campaign. All the areas of this team are filled with top-class players, and there is no excuse for Spurs not to put up a fight for the biggest titles this season.
However, one area of the team where there have been some consistency problems is that of the left flank. Destiny Udogie has made himself an uncontested starter for the North London side. However, he is currently sidelined with a knee injury, and Thomas Frank has used Djed Spence as the left-back against PSG and Burnley.
While the Englishman has impressed in some games, his struggles with consistency are there for everyone to see. For instance, he put in a good performance in the game against Burnley, but before that, he was quite poor in several games and it is clear that he will have to work on this aspect of his game to compete for a starting spot going forward.
This was also the sentiment of the Tottenham insider John Wenham as he spoke to Tottenham News about Spence. Wenham highlighted the inconsistent nature of some of Spence’s recent games, and highlight how this will make it difficult for him to compete with Udogie, whom he described as one of the best left-backs in the world:
“I think he will always be able to challenge because he’s a very good player, but he does need to keep his mind to it.”
“I think he was very up for the game against PSG, as he was very up for the game against Arsenal. But whilst he was incredibly good in both of those games, for me, he was fairly poor against both Luton Town and Bayern Munich. “
“So I think he has to add consistency to his game. You know, Udogie, injuries aside, is one of the best left-backs in world football.”
It is hard to argue against Wenham, as Spence has clearly struggled with consistency and needs to improve this aspect of his game. If he is able to do that, Thomas Frank would have a very well covered left flank, with both Udogie, once he recovers from his physical problems, and Spence rotating through this hectic season.
Having signed a new contract, Spence now know that Tottenham have faith in his abilities. The onus is on him to now prove his worth on the pitch. Whether that can be done week-in, week-out remains to be seen.
