Alejandro Garnacho has finalised a transfer to Chelsea, leaving Manchester United under less than ideal circumstances.
Ineos had been looking to move him on all summer after he was included among a group of five players no longer in the club’s plans.
The deal finally went through in the last week of the window, with Chelsea agreeing to a £40 million fee.
Garnacho’s relationship with United soured after comments made following the Europa League final. He publicly questioned the line-up decisions, and Amorim responded by telling him it was time to go. He now finds himself wearing the badge of a Premier League rival.
Once considered one of United’s brightest prospects, Garnacho did not hold back after leaving, taking aim at his old club shortly after arriving at Stamford Bridge.
Alejandro Garnacho has faced questions about his attitude throughout his time at Manchester United, and his social media presence has not exactly helped quiet those concerns.
This summer, he was spotted wearing Marcus Rashford’s Aston Villa shirt, a choice that did not go down well with supporters. By the time he left Manchester, little goodwill remained.
Speaking to Chelsea for the first time since his transfer, Garnacho did not hold back in suggesting that he views the move as a clear step up from what he left behind at Old Trafford.
“Yeah, I think it’s a bigger step you know,” Garnacho said. “The situation of the club, I think is a good step for me.”
After confirming his deal, Garnacho also said: “To join the world champions is special, we’re the best team in the world! It’s amazing to be here”.
Garnacho has not thanked United since his departure, and the connection with supporters appears to have broken down completely.
Given the current state of that relationship, his first game back at Old Trafford is likely to be a charged one, and it’s not far off now.
United secured a crucial 3-2 victory over Burnley before the international break, and now face two challenging Premier League fixtures.
The first is a trip to the Etihad for a Manchester derby. Then, on September 20, Chelsea visit Old Trafford, which could see Garnacho face his old club for the first time.
