Liverpool are making a strong start to their defence of the Premier League title, and there is still more to come from them, as they have yet to see the best of Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz.

Arne Slot’s side have started strongly, unbeaten and already five points clear of Arsenal after just five league matches.

Isak is still working his way back to full fitness, while Wirtz has not found the net yet. Hugo Ekitike has shown some encouraging signs early on, and the decision to extend Mohamed Salah’s and Virgil van Dijk’s contracts over the summer has clearly helped steady things.

But Alexis Mac Allister believes they could get even better if they managed to bring in his international teammate Lionel Messi.

Mac Allister spoke about Messi in a recent interview with TNT Sports, where he was asked by a Liverpool supporter about their relationship.

“It’s a pleasure to play alongside him. He’s the best player I’ve ever seen.

“And I don’t think that’s going to change. I’m so happy we won a World Cup together. That’s not an easy thing. But I really admire him on and off the pitch.”

The fan also questioned the Argentine midfielder if he had any conversation about Liverpool with Messi.

“Yeah, we had a conversation about Liverpool, about some players and he’s someone that watches a lot of football. Even his friend [Luis] Suarez was here. So yeah, of course he knows about it and we had a few chats.

“Hopefully one day [he will join Liverpool], but I think he will have to learn English a little bit better!”

Alexis Mac Allister explains the main difference between playing for Liverpool and Argentina

Being a regular in both the Premier League title holders and the current world champions gives Mac Allister a unique perspective, with his role central to both the Liverpool and Argentina setups.

Even with all the surrounding talent at Anfield, he did not hesitate when asked about the main difference between representing his club and his country.

“That here we don’t have Messi!” Mac Allister replied.

Of his 39 caps for Argentina, 29 have come alongside Messi, including six starts during their 2022 World Cup campaign and another five during their 2024 Copa America win.
