Amadou Onana’s move from Everton to Aston Villa occurred over a year ago, yet his agent continues to discuss the transfer away from Merseyside.
In recent years, Everton have had to make several high-profile sales in order to stay within Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
But since the Friedkin Group took over, those financial pressures have eased, and the club are now on much steadier ground.
In 2022, Onana explained his decision to join Everton over West Ham United upon his initial arrival in England earlier that year.
His spell at Goodison Park did not last long, though. In 2024, as Everton faced mounting pressure from financial regulations, they sold him for £50m.
The midfielder’s time at Goodison Park may feel like a thing of the past now, but his agent has recently shed light on what drove him to make the move to Aston Villa.
Since his move, Onana has often spoken fondly about his time at Goodison Park and maintained a strong connection with the fanbase.
Now, speaking to journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Melissa Onana – who also represents her brother – explained the reasoning behind the move.
“Aston Villa’s sporting project was crystal clear. It was a project where Amadou could continue to develop. We spoke with the sporting director, and the salary was also attractive, let’s not kid ourselves.
“The Euros were coming up, Amadou was performing well, and we finalised the deal. Then, Manchester United entered the picture. But I had already given my word to Aston Villa.
“We knew very well that Manchester would be able to offer better financial terms, but we had already given our word to Aston Villa, and the project was a good fit. The style of football played, the club’s ambition: Amadou felt right at home there.”
The midfielder has since impressed on European nights for Unai Emery’s side, and received praise from Micah Richards for his performances since leaving Everton.
It is clear that even if there was late interest from United in 2024 before he left for Villa Park, his mind was already made up by then as he stood by his decision – something which will not have gone unnoticed among many fans.
Onana has been looking much more comfortable at Villa, where he played a big role in their 4-0 win over Bournemouth on the weekend.
Troy Deeney praised his performance, noting the impact he had on both sides of the ball for Aston Villa.
He stated: “A massive 4-0 performance from Aston Villa against a very good Bournemouth side and he was at the heart of it. Breaking things up, gliding through the midfield with those big powerful legs. Gets himself on the scoresheet as well.”
