Tottenham players defied all odds last season as they ended the club’s trophy drought and won the Europa League

‘A rollercoaster season’… That is the best way to describe Tottenham’s season under Ange Postecoglou. The Lilywhites went through all the highs and lows in the last nine months with Big Ange at the helm. The campaign started with the Australian tactician promising to win a trophy during his second season at N17, and ended with the club winning the Europa League against all odds.

But a lot happened during that time and fan loyalty was also tested as Spurs just did not get going in domestic competitions. The Lilywhites finished the Premier League campaign just a place above the relegation zone, registering 22 losses along the way. Ange’s men also failed to reach the 40-point mark in the league, and would have been relegated if the teams below them were somewhat competitive.

Although the club was enduring a tough domestic campaign, the results in Europe suggested something else. Ange Postecoglou decided to write off the domestic campaign midway through the season as results were not improving. The North London club focused on the Europa League instead and put all their eggs in one basket. It is fair to say that the gamble worked out well, as the Lilywhites won the Europa League against all odds.

Hugo Lloris heaps praise on Tottenham after the club secured UEL title

Not many fans expected Tottenham to go all the way in the Europa League after the club endured an injury crisis midway through the season. Ange Postecoglou was forced to play inexperienced players in different positions as the Lilywhites aimed to carve out positive results in Europe.

However, Big Ange exceeded expectations and managed to end a 17-year wait for a major trophy at N17. Now, club legend Hugo Lloris has summed up Tottenham’s season under the Australian tactician. Speaking to Sky Sports, Lloris said,

“They had a really hard season. They had a lot of injuries as well that affected the team and performances and I think in the second part of the season, it looks like they decided to go all-in for the Europa League. They made it and you just have to congratulate them because it is another way to go to the Champions League. At the end of the day, I don’t know if you finish 10th, 14th, 15th, 16th and if you get a chance to win a trophy, on the other hand, it is just an amazing achievement.”

Hugo Lloris suggested that Tottenham endured a tough season as the injury crisis affected the team’s performance. However, the ex-Spurs player acknowledged the Europa League success that Ange’s men endured, which also ensured Champions League qualification along the way. Lloris also pointed out that the Premier League position should not matter if the club manages to win any sort of silverware at the end of the season.

Now, Daniel Levy must invest heavily in the summer to build on the Europa League success next season. With Ange Postecoglou relieved from his duties and being replaced by Thomas Frank, the fans will hope that the Lilywhites do not get complacent heading into the transfer market. A lot of issues in the squad need to be addressed before the season gets started.
