Atalanta are the latest Serie A club to confirm their opposition to proposals of a newly-formatted European Super League, following an important ruling by the European Court of Justice on Thursday morning.

The ECJ decided that FIFA and UEFA are ‘abusing a dominant position’ and cannot take action against teams or individuals involved in competitions that they do not organise.

Then, slightly later on Thursday, A22 sports announced their new proposals for a newly structured breakaway Super League, which would have three separate tiers and would involve relegation and promotion.

Serie A clubs, as well as the FIGC, have begun sharing their official stances on the subject. Roma were the first to comment, confirming that they ‘in no way’ endorse the Super League

The FIGC have also taken a stance against the new competition, an opinion that has also been mirrored by Atalanta, who released the following statement on Thursday afternoon.

“Atalanta BC, following today’s ruling by the European Court of Justice, expresses its total opposition to any hypothesis of a Super League and confirms its stance, which has always been to value the national championships, sporting meritocracy, and to safeguarding the common passion and respect for our national and international sporting institutions.”
