Manchester United’s goalkeeping department is approaching a critical summer, with competition set to grow at Old Trafford.

Decisions made in the upcoming months could shape the team’s defense for years, especially after a season filled with change and new stability.

The arrival of a new first-choice goalkeeper has changed the order, but not everyone is willing to accept their role without a fight.

One familiar player is getting ready for a key moment that could decide his future with the club.

The situation is far from decided, despite how it might seem.

That player is Andre Onana.

Onana is determined to regain his position as Manchester United’s No. 1 when his loan at Trabzonspor ends in May, as reported by The Guardian.

The 29-year-old joined the Turkish club in September after a tough time at Manchester led United to sign Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp in an £18m deal.

Onana is set to return for pre-season training, believing he will have the chance to compete for the No. 1 jersey.

He was signed from Inter in July 2023 for £44.1m on a five-year deal, and initially, he was seen as the long-term answer in goal under Erik ten Hag.

However, a series of notable mistakes hurt his standing, and Ruben Amorim later benched him for April’s match against Newcastle United after a costly performance in a 2-2 draw with Olympique Lyonnais.

With Lammens stepping up, the challenge has only become greater.

The Belgian has been impressive in his debut Premier League season with his calmness and consistency.

At 23 years old, he has kept five clean sheets in 21 league games and played a crucial role in Monday’s 1-0 win at Everton, making key saves and commanding his area under pressure.

For Onana, the path is clear.

Regaining the shirt will take more than just a good reputation and determination.
