Anthony Gordon’s switch to Barcelona is not just a big loss for Newcastle United. It also casts new doubt over Marcus Rashford’s future at the Camp Nou.
Barcelona have not just brought in another winger. They have reportedly put serious money into a player operating in the same part of the pitch, and that could have major implications for Rashford.
His time at Barcelona is not over yet, but a permanent deal now feels much harder to justify.
Barcelona are said to have agreed a £70m package with Newcastle for Gordon, including bonuses and a future sale percentage, after delaying his unveiling.
That is not the kind of deal you make for a squad player. It points to a clear plan and a major role.
That matters because Gordon’s profile could overlap with the role Rashford is still trying to make his own.
Gordon’s arrival does not mean Rashford is out of the picture. It does make his path to a permanent move far less straightforward.
Rashford joined Barcelona on loan from Manchester United until 30 June 2026, giving the club plenty of flexibility.
That flexibility now looks even more valuable. If Gordon has become a priority, Barcelona do not need to rush into another major attacking signing.
None of this means Rashford has failed. It means the logic around his future has shifted because the club appear to have made a bigger commitment elsewhere.
The situation is clear enough. Barcelona can still rate Rashford, but Gordon’s arrival makes a permanent move harder to defend.
For Rashford, that is the real issue. Clubs do not just buy players, they build squads. Right now, Barcelona’s plans seem to point more clearly towards Gordon.
