Lionel Scaloni delivered a clear update on Lionel Messi ahead of Argentina’s upcoming friendly, putting to rest any doubts about his involvement.

Speaking on Monday, Scaloni confirmed that Messi will start against Zambia, calling it an important test for the reigning world champions. Fabrizio Romano confirmed this in a tweet:

"Lionel Messi will start tomorrow. It will be a serious test for our team at best level possible."

The decision follows Argentina’s underwhelming 2-1 win over Mauritania, where Messi came off the bench, and the team struggled to maintain control in the second half.

From an international perspective, this game carries added weight. It is one of Argentina’s final tune-ups before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they will aim to defend their title. Scaloni made it clear that he plans to field a strong lineup, using this match to sharpen the team’s core group.

Messi remains central to those plans. Despite being 38, he continues to produce at a high level for Inter Miami. Last season, he recorded 43 goals and 26 assists across all competitions. This season, he already has five goals in six appearances, showing no signs of slowing down.

His World Cup stats add to that importance. Across five World Cups, Messi has played in 26 matches, scoring 13 goals and providing 8 assists. During the 2022 World Cup, he delivered one of the greatest tournament runs ever, scoring 7 goals and adding 3 assists while leading Argentina to the title and winning the Golden Ball.

Still, questions around his World Cup future remain. Messi has not officially confirmed whether he will play in the 2026 tournament, which could mark his final appearance on the global stage. Scaloni has left that decision entirely in Messi’s hands, emphasizing that the focus is on keeping him fit and enjoying the moment.

Tuesday’s match offers more than a routine friendly. It is a chance for Argentina to reset after a shaky performance and re-establish rhythm before the biggest stage.

With Messi back in the starting lineup, all attention shifts to how Argentina responds.
