Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has addressed the goalkeeping situation as Alisson Becker nears a return to full fitness amid the impressive form from Caoimhin Kelleher. Kelleher has delivered outstanding performances for Liverpool since the October international break, making a strong starting claim throughout this season.

Slot emphasized the importance of ensuring Alisson’s complete recovery before reintroducing him into the starting lineup. He expressed confidence in Kelleher’s contributions, praising the young goalkeeper for his performances in Alisson’s absence.

Slot stated that rushing Alisson back at less than full fitness would not benefit the player or the team. Kelleher has taken his opportunity with both hands, showcasing maturity and composure during critical moments for Liverpool.

Kelleher maintained the starting role through the toughest fixture period so far, playing several top clubs in all competitions. Liverpool have faced some strong opponents both in the Champions League and the Premier League since October.

The 26-year-old’s performances have bolstered Liverpool’s strong campaign across all competitions during the last two months. Kelleher played similarly last season when Allison suffered an injury during a severe injury crisis under former manager Jurgen Klopp.

Alisson, widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, has played an integral role in Liverpool’s success under Klopp. Slot highlighted that Alisson’s rehabilitation is progressing well but requires careful management during the final stages. The coach noted that the end phase of recovery demands precision to avoid setbacks and ensure long-term fitness.

Speaking to the Post-match press conference (via The Times), Slot claimed that Kelleher’s impressive performances have allowed more recovery time for first-choice Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson. He said:

“I have been clear, a few weeks ago, about what my position is about the goalkeepers. We are just waiting for the moment that Alisson is completely fit because Caoimhin is doing too well to put Alisson in goal if he is only on 50 per cent. That would not be good for Alisson or the team. He’s getting there. It might take a few more extra days but he is getting closer and closer. The end phase of a rehab is always the period where you feel like is he really there or does he need a few extra days. He will be in goal before the end of December if things continue like they are.”

Kelleher’s impressive form remains crucial in maintaining Liverpool’s strong defensive record during a demanding fixture schedule. The Irishman’s performances have sparked discussions about his future, with reports linking him to clubs like Chelsea.

Adding another layer to the situation, Liverpool have agreed to sign Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia. Valencia will retain the 23-year-old for the current season before he joins Liverpool ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.

Slot’s transparent communication regarding Alisson’s recovery and Kelleher’s role shows his leadership in handling complex squad dynamics. The upcoming return of Alisson, combined with Kelleher’s current form and Mamardashvili’s future integration, presents a multifaceted challenge that Slot appears well-prepared to tackle
