Legendary left-back says one side was simply unbeatable — including for Arsenal

As Chelsea and Arsenal prepare for a Premier League showdown that could shape the title race, an age-old debate has resurfaced: which iconic team was superior — Arsenal’s 2003–04 Invincibles or Jose Mourinho’s dominant Chelsea side? Few are better placed to answer than Ashley Cole, who played key roles in both eras and remains a symbol of the London rivalry.

Cole won the Premier League unbeaten with Arsenal before moving to Stamford Bridge in 2006, joining a Chelsea side fresh off back-to-back titles under Mourinho. With experience inside both dressing rooms, Cole didn’t hesitate when asked to compare the two.

Ashley Cole explains why Mourinho’s Chelsea were the superior side

Speaking on Stick To Football, Cole admitted his admiration for both groups but made it clear that Arsenal’s Invincibles simply couldn’t cope with Chelsea once Mourinho arrived. Arsène Wenger never managed a Premier League win over Mourinho’s Blues, and Cole said the gulf was obvious on the pitch.

“We couldn’t beat that Chelsea team,” he explained. “When Jose came to the Premier League, we just could not break them down. They won the league two years in a row. Whether it was tactics or how they were set up, the Jose effect — we couldn’t beat them.”

Chelsea’s legendary 2004–05 defence conceded just 15 league goals — a record that still hasn’t been matched — and their physicality, discipline and tactical structure made them one of the most formidable Premier League sides ever assembled. While Arsenal’s Invincibles were brilliant, Cole insisted they didn’t dominate teams the way Chelsea did under Mourinho.

A rivalry shaped by shared stars

Despite the intensity of the rivalry, Chelsea and Arsenal have exchanged several notable players over the years — 20 in total. Alongside Cole, stars such as Petr Čech, Willian, Cesc Fàbregas and Olivier Giroud all represented both clubs. More recently, Kai Havertz and Noni Madueke have made the switch from Chelsea to the Emirates, with Madueke even sparking fan debate after a social media post hinting at his new loyalties.

As Cole knows well, drama is never far away when these two London giants meet. And his verdict only fuels the fire ahead of another high-stakes encounter.
