Atlanta United parted ways Wednesday with longtime vice president and technical director Carlos Bocanegra.

Bocanegra, 45, joined the front office in 2015, oversaw Atlanta's roster construction as a 2017 expansion franchise and celebrated an MLS Cup championship in 2018.

Atlanta United missed the playoffs in 2020 and 2022 and did not make it beyond the first round in 2021 and 2023. The team (8-12-7, 31 points) currently sits in the ninth and final playoff position in the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of the Philadelphia Union.

Club president and CEO Garth Lagerwey will assume Bocanegra's duties on an interim basis for the remainder of the 2024 season.

"We are deeply appreciative of Carlos' dedication and success over the last nine years with Atlanta United. However, I believe it's time for our club to move in a new direction," Lagerwey said.

"While we will continue to fight for a playoff spot down the final stretch of the season, this gives us a clean slate and a runway to properly assess all vacancies in our sporting operation ahead of what will be an extremely important offseason for our club."

Atlanta United also won the 2019 Campeones Cup and 2019 U.S. Open Cup during Bocanegra's tenure.

"I want to personally thank Carlos for his many contributions to the success of Atlanta United on and off the pitch," owner and chairman Arthur Blank said. "He was here from the beginning and deserves much credit for our MLS Championship; other trophies we've won over the last nine years; and the way our team captured the heart of this city even before we launched in 2017.

"Several dynamic players signed by Carlos have been foundational to our success, including some who have moved on to opportunities in elite leagues and clubs across the world. I will always have great affection for Carlos and his beautiful family, and deep gratitude for the passion and dedication he brought to our club over the years. I wish him all the best in his future endeavors."

Atlanta United are also seeking a full-time head coach after parting ways with Gonzalo Pineda in early June. Former assistant Rob Valentino is the interim coach.

Bocanegra, a defender, is a former U.S. national team captain who played professionally from 2000-14 in the MLS, England, France, Scotland and Spain.

Romano: ‘Agreement closer’ – Man United now advancing in deal no one thought would happen

Rasmus Hojlund is now advancing in a move to AC Milan after being pressured to depart Manchester United against his will. While not entirely forcing him out the door, the hierarchy at Old Trafford has made it clear to the Dane that he would not be playing a prominent role if he stayed for the upcoming season. This comes after the arrival of a like-for-like replacement in the form of 22-year-old Benjamin Sesko, who’s expected to be Ruben Amorim’s first-choice No.9 from the start of the campaign. Rasmus Hojlund resigned to premature United exit Hojlund, meanwhile, has publicly expressed on numerous occasions that he wishes to stay put and fight for a spot – although he’s seemingly starting to realise that doing so would be more detrimental to his career long-term. In United’s final pre-season friendly against Fiorentina over the weekend, he did not feature for a single minute. United will have to accept a considerable loss on the £64 million they shelled out for him back in 2023, as his performances over the last two seasons have made it clear he’s not, at least at this stage, a player of such calibre to warrant such a fee. His lacklustre form hasn’t deterred clubs from registering their interest, though. On Monday, it was revealed that Hojlund was being targeted by five Serie A clubs, albeit with Milan as the frontrunners. Hojlund closing in on AC Milan switch The deal looks to be developing relatively quickly in the build-up to 2025/2026 getting underway; Fabrizio Romano confirmed this morning that an ‘agreement [is] closer’ after Hojlund began ‘opening the doors’ to the Rossoneri. Talks are continuing to try and reach an agreement on personal terms, with United ready to sanction his departure – whether that be on loan or a permanent basis.

Jon Gruden 'looking forward to having the truth come out' amid lawsuit against NFL

Jon Gruden sent another warning shot toward the NFL after scoring a major win in court. On Tuesday, Gruden welcomed a ruling that will force the NFL to litigate the circumstances of his firing in court rather than closed-door arbitration. The former Las Vegas Raiders coach made it clear that he intends to continue his legal challenge to the NFL, ensuring that they are held accountable. “I’m looking forward to having the truth come out, and I want to make sure what happened to me doesn’t happen to anyone else,” Gruden said in a statement provided to ESPN’s Don Van Natta Jr. “The league’s actions disrupted the whole season. We were leading the division at the time and they completely blindsided me and the team.” The Raiders were 3-1 in 2021 when Gruden was forced to resign after offensive emails he had sent between 2011 and 2018 were leaked. Gruden has alleged that the NFL leaked the emails to force him out of a job after obtaining them during an investigation into the Washington Commanders. The NFL is set to appeal Monday’s ruling, but if that appeal fails, the league may be forced into public discovery. One alternative would be to offer Gruden a settlement, but he has not said whether or not he would be interested in such a resolution. Gruden has not held an NFL coaching job since the Raiders forced him out. He has recently spoken about possibly making a return to coaching at the college level.

Vikings WR gets brutal injury news for second straight season

A Minnesota Vikings wide receiver's season is already over. The Minnesota Vikings announced on Tuesday that wide receiver Rondale Moore is being placed on season-ending injured reserve due to a leg injury that he suffered in the team's first preseason game against the Houston Texans this past weekend. It is a devastating blow for Moore, who is now being sidelined for an entire season, before it even begins, for the second year in a row. Moore signed a one-year, $2 million contract in free agency with the Vikings this offseason in the hopes he could return from a different injury that cost him the entirety of the 2024 season. Moore was a member of the Atlanta Falcons in 2024 after being acquired in a trade with the Arizona Cardinals for backup quarterback Desmond Ridder. This is now two different teams that Moore has been a part of, but will never play a game for them due to injuries. Moore was injured while returning a punt. He began his career with the Arizona Cardinals, catching 135 passes for 1,201 yards over three seasons before being traded. He was never going to be counted on to be a key contributor for the Vikings offense this season, especially given the superstars they already have at wide receiver in Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, but he still had a chance to be an interesting depth player. Now it is fair to wonder what the rest of his career might even look like. Missing two full seasons due to two different leg injuries is going to be a brutal thing to try to come back from. Missing two seasons for any reason is difficult, but when you add the leg injuries to the equation, it makes the obstacle even steeper.

Milwaukee Brewers Force Paul Skenes Into Unfiltered Admission About Brew Crew After 14-0 Beatdown

Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes was no match for the Milwaukee Brewers – again. The former LSU Tigers star pitcher got lit up on the mound by the red-hot Brew Crew on Tuesday night, as he allowed four earned runs on six hits (including two home runs) while issuing two free passes and striking out four Milwaukee hitters across four innings of work. The Brewers eked out a 14-0 victory to win the series and move just a win away this Wednesday to sweep the Pirates and extend their win streak to 12 games. Skenes’ start tied his shortest thus far in the 2025 MLB regular season. The last time he pitched for only four innings was against the Brewers as well on June 25, when he surrendered four earned runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts in a 4-2 loss, also at American Family Field. Skenes is now 0-2 with a 5.79 ERA in three starts this season versus the Brewers. Skenes speaks up on Milwaukee Brewers after 14-0 loss The reigning National League Rookie of the Year opened up about his thoughts on the Brewers and his performance against the streaking Milwaukee side. “They’re obviously hot right now,” Skenes said of the Brewers, per Rich Rovito of MLB.com. “I got in positions that weren’t very advantageous to me to where I had to be perfect, and I didn’t have my best stuff. I couldn’t really count on any singular pitch to be executed and get guys out. “I had some 3-2 pitches that caught too much of the plate and didn’t execute two-strike pitches as well as I should have. They did a good job capitalizing on it.” The Brewers improved to 75-44 with their win over the Pirates, while Pittsburgh dropped to 51-70.
