Barcelona sign JJ Gabriel alternative

JJ Gabriel has become one of the biggest stories surrounding Manchester United despite being only 15 years old.

That is unusual territory for an academy player who is still years away from what would ordinarily be considered his breakthrough.

However, Gabriel’s talent has made anonymity almost impossible.

He became United’s youngest-ever Under-18 player at 14 and scored twice on his debut against Leeds United.

Since then, his development has accelerated, culminating in first-team involvement and a stunning UEFA Youth League hat-trick against Sabah earlier this month.

However, attention has quickly shifted from what Gabriel could achieve at Old Trafford to whether he will remain there at all.

The teenager has reportedly requested to leave United, with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain among the European heavyweights circling.

Gabriel has already travelled to Barcelona for talks, while his approaching 16th birthday could prove significant in determining his next move.

United have invested years into his development and still hope to convince him that Old Trafford provides the right pathway, but the prospect of losing one of their brightest talents has become increasingly real.

Barcelona complete deal for attacking midfielder

Barcelona have now moved to secure another highly-rated teenager who operates in similar attacking areas to Gabriel.

Fabrizio Romano reported via X three days ago that the Spanish champions had agreed a deal to sign 16-year-old Portuguese attacking midfielder Dany Freire.

Freire had been on trial with Barcelona and impressed sufficiently to earn a contract, with Romano reporting that he had passed his trial and was set to complete the formalities of the move.

The deal is particularly interesting given Barcelona’s pursuit of Gabriel, although there is no suggestion that signing Freire ends their interest in the United forward.

Gabriel can operate centrally or from wide positions, while his close control and willingness to attack defenders have helped him stand out against players several years older.

Barcelona clearly continue to hunt elite young attacking talent.

Whether Freire ultimately becomes an alternative to Gabriel or potentially develops alongside him will depend on how the United star’s increasingly complicated future unfolds.
