Benjamin Sesko joined Manchester United with a reputation for being an elite prospect. He impressed during his two seasons with RB Leipzig, scoring 27 goals in 64 appearances. As such, he became a hot commodity around Europe, with Manchester United and Newcastle United both fighting for his signature this summer.
Now, Sesko will be tasked with growing into the starting role at United. He's seen as the long-term answer to Ruben Amorim's goal-scoring issues. However, his first three games in the Premier League (and his one start in the Carabao Cup) have been underwhelming. Sesko may take some time to adjust to his new surroundings.
During a recent interview with "Ekipa," Sekso admitted that he's adjusting to the increased level of competition the Premier League has to offer.
“The level of the matches is certainly much higher, the players and teammates are also at a higher level," Sesko said. "After all, English football is at the highest level in the world of football. But I am very much looking forward to the coming period, also because I am getting better and faster in every training session, and I am also progressing in my football mentality every day. I wanted to move to England, and fortunately, my wish came true.”
United paid $98.8 million for Sesko's services. It knew it would likely take some time for him to get up to speed, both in terms of Amorim's system and the demands of playing in the Premier League. Nevertheless, United pushed ahead with getting the deal over the line.
Therefore, it's fair to assume that United's scouting and coaching staff are all high on what Sesko will bring to the squad.
The problem with playing for a team like United is that there's rarely any time to adjust. The media demands excellence from the moment you pull on the shirt. And the fanbase is growing tired of the consistent struggles of a once-great club.
However, Amorim is overseeing a rebuild. Talents like Sesko will take time to acclimate, not only to the Premier League, but to a new country, new culture and new style of play.
We should start to see flashes of Sesko's talent in the coming months. He may even end the season with a reasonable goal record. Yet, it's in the years to come when we will see him at his best. Until then, United must remain patient and trust its scouting team in believing Sesko can be the next world-class striker to represent the Red Devils.
