With the arrival of Senne Lammens, Andre Onana's future with Manchester United has been called into question. The Cameroonian keeper is yet to feature in the Premier League this season, with Altay Bayindir being preferred in goal.
However, Onana did feature in the Carabao Cup against Grimsby, where United lost 12-11 on penalties. Both Bayindir and Onana have made high-profile mistakes to begin the season.
As such, there's a growing belief that Lammens could be fast-tracked into United's starting 11, thus usurping Onana from his position as the team's first-choice keeper.
According to a report by Turkish outlet "Takvim," Trabzonspor has reached out to United with a loan offer for Onana. The deal would likely see the shot-stopper head to Turkey until the end of the season. The report has no details on whether an option or obligation to buy has been included in the offer.
Moving on from Onana would ease what is turning out to be a logjam between the sticks for United. Getting some, if not all, of Onana's $6.2 million salary off the books for the season would also be a welcome outcome from United's hierarchy.
Turkey's transfer window doesn't close until September 12. As such, there is still plenty of time for United to reach an agreement with Trabzonspor.
According to a report from "FootballInsider," Onana also has admirers in the Saudi Pro League.
"Manchester United could sell Andre Onana to the Saudi Pro League in order to reshuffle their goalkeeping department, sources have told Football Insider," Pete O'Rourke reported. "...sources say that Ruben Amorim may still be able to sell the Cameroon international within the next month, as the transfer deadline in Saudi Arabia is not until 23 September."
A move to the Saudi league would likely be financially lucrative for Onana. There would also be a few issues with United getting its desired transfer fee for the keeper. However, at this point, there doesn't appear to be a concrete offer in place.
Therefore, Trabzonspor is likely the most logical landing spot for Onana. Of course, things can change in an instant.
Onana's future with United appears to be drawing to a close. Amorim is building a team in his image, and Onana's high-profile errors have all but ended his chance of being the long-term answer in goal.
So, it may be in Onana's best interests to push for a move. After all, it's better to be playing than be glued to the bench for the next 12 months, especially in a World Cup year.
