Bologna have officially completed the signing of a former Manchester United defender, adding another connection between the two clubs.
United supporters have become particularly familiar with the Italian side following Joshua Zirkzee’s £36.5 million move to Old Trafford in 2024.
The Dutchman arrived with considerable expectations after flourishing under Thiago Motta.
Rather than operating as a traditional striker, Zirkzee excelled at dropping deep, linking attacks and creating opportunities for teammates.
His technical ability and intelligence made him one of Serie A’s most exciting forwards.
However, translating those qualities into Premier League football has proved difficult.
Zirkzee enjoyed a dream debut, scoring the winner against Fulham, but struggled to establish himself under Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim.
His confidence suffered particularly badly against Newcastle in December 2024, when he was substituted before half-time and booed by sections of Old Trafford.
Opportunities have remained limited under Michael Carrick, with Benjamin Sesko providing competition for the starting position.
Nevertheless, Zirkzee recently received an unexpected Netherlands recall following Brian Brobbey’s injury.
He subsequently scored the winning goal against Serbia, with Dutch media praising his match-winning contribution.
Now, Bologna have strengthened their own squad by recruiting a player with considerable experience at Old Trafford.
Bologna have confirmed the signing of former Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian on a contract running until June 30, 2027.
The Italian club announced the agreement on their official website on Thursday, October 8.
Darmian, 36, joined United from Torino in 2015 under Louis van Gaal.
His disciplined defending initially impressed supporters, although competition for places eventually restricted his opportunities.
He remained a dependable option under Jose Mourinho, starting the 2017 Europa League final victory over Ajax at left-back.
Darmian also helped United win the FA Cup and League Cup before returning to Italy with Parma in 2019.
His subsequent spell at Inter Milan proved particularly successful.
He became a trusted defensive option, winning Serie A titles and featuring in two Champions League finals.
Bologna have praised his versatility, positional awareness and tactical discipline.
The move offers Darmian another opportunity to compete in Serie A while extending a career that has already delivered numerous major honours.
