Manchester United are looking toward major changes this summer.
There is a focus on trimming the wage bill.
United’s wide options have come under scrutiny.
And with the summer window approaching, decisions are being made that could define the direction of next season.
One of those decisions involves Jadon Sancho.
Borussia Dortmund have now officially confirmed their interest in re-signing Sancho on a free transfer when his United contract expires in June, opening the door to a third spell at the German club.
The Bundesliga side are exploring the possibility of bringing the 26-year-old back to the Signal Iduna Park, where he previously developed into one of Europe’s most exciting attacking talents.
However, any potential return is far from straightforward.
Sancho would be required to take a significant pay cut on his current deal, which is believed to be around £15 million per year, making the financial aspect the biggest obstacle in negotiations.
It was reported that the Englishman is willing to do so.
Dortmund’s managing director Lars Ricken addressed the situation when speaking to Sports Bild by saying, “We’re currently looking at a lot of players and analysing them closely.
“We check whether they can make us better.
“We’re doing that with Jadon as well.”
Despite his struggles in England, there remains a strong belief within Dortmund that a return to familiar surroundings could help Sancho rediscover the form that once made him one of the most dangerous wingers in world football.
His time at United has been turbulent since arriving in a £73 million move from Dortmund in 2021, failing to deliver on expectations.
Loan spells have done little to stabilise his trajectory either.
After a promising short return to Dortmund, Jadon Sancho endured another underwhelming stint at Chelsea, and his current loan at Aston Villa has also failed to reignite his form, with just one goal and three assists in 31 appearances, only 17 which have been starts.
For United, allowing Sancho to leave on a free would represent a significant financial loss on their initial investment, but it would remove one of the club’s highest earners from the wage bill.
With Dortmund now openly positioning themselves for a reunion, the call may ultimately come down to Jadon Sancho.
