The mood around N17 is low as Tottenham have failed to make an impression in the transfer market. The Lilywhites had the chance to use the Europa League success as a springboard for new transfers, but the inability to get deals over the line is going to prove costly for the North London club next season. One can only feel sorry for Thomas Frank, who is stuck in this dire situation.
Club chairman Daniel Levy recently put out a bold statement suggesting that Spurs are aiming to win the Premier League and the Champions League in the coming years. Anyone who has followed the Lilywhites religiously knows that this is yet another false promise by Levy and the Tottenham hierarchy to please the fans for the time being.
The Spurs chairman needs to put the money where his mouth is and bring in some quality players to prove that he actually means business. By the looks of it, Thomas Frank is about to begin pre-season with almost the same squad that was a part of the disastrous domestic campaign last season.
As days go by, Tottenham are finding it tough to land their intended targets for one reason or another. Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo might just be another name that might be added to the list of ‘missed opportunities’ at N17. It was reported earlier that Spurs were interested in signing the 25-year-old as they looked to bolster the attack, but the £65m valuation has put off the North London club for now.
Now, ex-scout Mick Brown has provided an interesting update in the transfer saga involving the Ghana international. Speaking to Football Insider, Brown said,
“With Semenyo, they really want to keep him because he was such a key player going forward and they don’t want to lose many more players. They’ve set this £70million asking price in the hope of deterring any interest. Tottenham have been made aware of that, from what I’ve heard, after they approached Bournemouth to see whether he might be available.”
The ex-scout added,
“They hope that will put them off, but you never know because he is a key target for Spurs. If they do get £70million for him, it’s a win-win really, because they can go and spend that money on replacing the players they’ve lost.”
Mick Brown has suggested that Bournemouth want to keep Antoine Semenyo for next season at all costs. The ex-scout added that the Cherries have put up a £70m asking price for the 25-year-old as they look to fend off interest from the Lilywhites in the summer. However, Brown also pointed out that it will be a win-win situation for both clubs if Spurs pay the asking price, as Bournemouth will get a premium fee for Semenyo and the North London club will get their intended target.
Signing the Ghana international for a hefty fee might prove to be a risk if he fails to deliver next season. The Bournemouth star is suited to Thomas Frank’s system and will flourish as an inverted winger at N17, but the pressure to play for a big club might just reach Semenyo’s head if things start to go south.
