The moment James Maddison collapsed to the pitch after picking up a muscular injury against Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur fans were fearing the worst. It did not look good for the English attacking midfielder.
The Spurs #10 had to be stretchered off the pitch. One of the club’s captains, it is safe to say that it doesn’t look like Thomas Frank would be able to count on him for the next few weeks and dare we say, months.
It is a shame because Maddison had a real chance to nail down a starting berth as the #10 in Frank’s setup. With Dejan Kulusevski out injured, the Danish tactician will now have to reinvent to fill the void in that position.

After the game, Thomas Frank was asked about his assessment of the injury and the coach’s initial prognosis did not offer much optimism. As quoted by Craig Hope of the Daily Mail via Fabrizio Romano, here is what he had to say:
“James Maddison’s injury looks bad. It was a brutal moment”
What was supposed to be a celebration of the glorious career Son Heung-min has spent at Tottenham and his last game wearing the jersey of the club turned out to be a match clouded by Maddison’s injury.
It is yet another iteration of the same story with the ex-Foxes midfielder, whose body keeps letting him down continually. For a player with Maddison’s talent, he should have been at a different level at this point of his career.
Instead, the 28-year-old will now have to spend some time on the sidelines, looking to recover from this latest setback. It is also worth remembering that he was one of the likely candidates to take over the armband from the out-going captain.
Thomas Frank will now have to wear his creative hat for the number 10 position in the early weeks of the new season. One option is to play Mohammed Kudus there. The ex-Hammers star can play in that position.
The other option would be to play Pape Matar Sarr in the advanced role. The Senegalese midfielder has shown he can play that role with aplomb, and let’s wait and see how Tottenham go about this situation in the coming weeks.
