Fabio Cannavaro is in contention to take over as head coach of CSKA Moscow after losing out on the Italy national team head coach job to former teammate Gennaro Gattuso according to Saturday’s reports in Italy.

Italy’s 2006 World Cup-winning captain is in line to take over at CSKA Moscow following his short-lived experience in charge of Dinamo Zagreb, which came to an end at the conclusion of the 2025-26 season

According to reports from Sky Sport Italia, Cannavaro has been specifically asked for by club President Evgeniy Giner.

Cannavaro links with CSKA Moscow after Italy

Cannavaro, who has also taken charge of Guangzhou Evergrande, Al-Nassr, Tianjin Quanjian, the China national team, Benevento, and Udinese in his coaching career to date, was briefly linked with the Italy national team job in recent weeks.

After learning that deals for Claudio Ranieri and Stefano Pioli were not going to be viable, the FIGC turned to a number of its former players, including Gattuso, Cannavaro and Daniele De Rossi.

Gattuso is now expected to take over as the new CT following the departure of Luciano Spalletti, with Leonardo Bonucci also in line to join his coaching staff.

That leaves Cannavaro free and available to discuss potential opportunities with other interested parties, among whom are CSKA Moscow.
