Fabio Capello has advised Simone Inzaghi to continue in his role as head coach of Inter, despite ongoing rumours that he could be tempted by a massively lucrative contract offer from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.

Inzaghi, who was recently dealt a 5-0 thrashing by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final, has been linked with a move away from San Siro at the end of the 2024-25 season.

The Nerazzurri tactician is due to speak with the Inter management at the beginning of the week and discuss his plans for the future.

Capello tells Inzaghi: ‘Call Marotta, move forwards together’

Despite the hurt following the Champions League final humiliation, Capello believes that Inzaghi would be best off staying put in his current job with Inter.

Capello admits that the 5-0 loss to PSG felt like more than just a loss, but he still feels that continuing together is the best option for Inter and Inzaghi, as long as the club still have faith in the coach.

He also feels that the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup is a blessing in disguise for the Nerazzurri, as it gives them an immediate opportunity to show what they are truly capable of at their best.

“I’ll tell you what I would have said: ‘The Club World Cup offers us an immediate opportunity, we want to make up for it and we will work hard for it,” Capello told La Gazzetta dello Sport when explaining what he would have said in Inzaghi’s shoes on Saturday night.

“On the other hand, if the coach responds as Inzaghi did, it does feel a bit strange,” Capello continued.

“His words the other night left me doubtful. There has to be context, of course, because the 5-0 against PSG is not just a defeat, it’s something more, but in short, my perplexities remain. It seemed like a corridor towards a farewell.”

Capello believes that Beppe Marotta still has full confidence in Inzaghi’s abilities, though.

“This is the key to everything,” he explained. “The club’s trust is the fundamental condition needed for a coach to continue working. Especially after a bitter feeling like the way the Champions League final was lost.”

And when asked what he would do if he were Inzaghi, Capello replied: “I would call Marotta, tell me where I have to sign and let’s move forwards together.”
