Carlisle United’s season has ended in frustration after another missed opportunity to climb back into the Football League, with the club once again falling short at a crucial stage of the campaign.

The pressure around Brunton Park had been building for some time following a difficult run of results, and expectations were high that experience at the helm would help steady the project.

Instead, the season ultimately drifted towards disappointment, ending in play-off heartbreak and a major reset behind the scenes.

Mark Hughes leaves Carlisle United

Mark Hughes, the former Manchester United and Wales striker, has now left Carlisle United by mutual agreement following their failure to secure promotion from the National League, as the club announced on their website.

Mark Hughes had taken charge of the club in February 2025 and was tasked with guiding them back up the divisions after relegation, but he was unable to deliver that immediate turnaround.

Carlisle eventually finished third in the table, leaving them reliant on the play-offs to extend their promotion hopes, only to suffer a 2-1 home defeat to Boreham Wood in the semi-final.

The club confirmed his departure in an official statement.

Chairman Tom Piatak praised Hughes’ professionalism throughout his tenure, saying: “Mark has conducted himself with real professionalism throughout his time at Carlisle United,” said chairman Tom Piatak.

“We are grateful for the work he has done, the standards he brought, and the progress made during the season.

“Following open and respectful discussions, both parties agreed this was the right time for the club to move in a different direction.

“Mark leaves with our thanks and best wishes, and he will always be welcome at Brunton Park.”

Mark Hughes began his playing career at Manchester United, where he came through the ranks as a trainee in 1980 before later leaving permanently at the end of the 1994–95 season to join Chelsea.

Hughes’ managerial career has taken him across multiple levels of football, including spells in the Premier League with clubs such as Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers, as well as international management with Wales.

He returned to club football more recently with Bradford City in 2022 before his move to Carlisle, but left the club 18 months later with the side struggling in League Two.

Following the latest setback, Carlisle have already begun a significant squad overhaul, releasing 13 first-team players as part of a wider rebuild ahead of the new season.
