Brazil is heading into the 2026 World Cup with expectations of competing for a sixth title, but that might only be in the fanbase's heads.

While Brazil remains the most successful nation in World Cup history with five titles, the South Americans have not lifted the trophy in 24 years and enter the tournament behind several European sides in betting odds.

Casemiro, who has represented Brazil in two World Cup tournaments, offered a much more measured assessment of the nation's chances at winning its sixth title this summer.

The midfielder acknowledged that reality heading into the tournament, making it clear Brazil should not be viewed as the leading contender.

“We aren’t the big favourites,” Casemiro told FIFA's media channel on Tuesday, per Reuters.

Although Casemiro acknowledged the overall strength of Brazil, he maintained that the team may be slightly behind some stronger rivals heading into the tournament.

“Of course, we’re in good shape. We’ve got a strong squad with a mix of experience and young talent,” Casemiro said. “Perhaps this time we’re a step behind, but we’re on our toes and that’s always a good thing.”

Brazil is currently trailing Spain, France and England in pre-tournament odds, despite their history and depth.

Brazil will play the World Cup under the guidance of manager Carlo Ancelotti in the Italian's first tournament on the South American nation's touchline.

“We have only had one year working with the manager, but in reality, we have only worked together for 40 days,” Casemiro said.

Brazil will open their World Cup campaign in Group C against Morocco on June 13, before facing Haiti on June 20 and Scotland on June 25.
