Chris Sutton started his weekly newspaper column this morning by writing off Celtic’s title chances of retaining the Scottish Premiership title after that damaging 2-0 defeat at Tannadice against Dundee United last weekend…
Auston Trusty though has been considerably more upbeat and believes that the title is still Celtic’s to lose. Love your optimism big man!
Chris Sutton also pointed out that St Mirren have already tasted success at Hampden against Celtic this season, winning the Premier Sports Cup final against the Hoops during Wilfried Nancy’s disastrous 33 day reign at Celtic, appointed of course by Michael Nicholson on the say-so of Dermot Desmond who had become best pals with Paul Tisdale, football’s Doctor Death.
Had that particular decision, where the timing was almost as bad as the candidate, not happened when it did and Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney were left in charge then Sutton reckons Celtic would have won that cup final and logically given their record before and after Nancy’s farcical tenure, would have been in a much better position in the league, probably clear at the top of the table.
“Funnily enough, I think they might have done so had they opted to keep Martin O’Neill in the management position at the time instead of appointing Wilfried Nancy the week before the big Hampden game, but that just sums up the type of dismal decision-making which has my old club in big bother,” Sutton stated in his weekly column in Daily Record this morning.
Stating exactly what a huge percentage of the Celtic support believes, Sutton outlined the shambles that Celtic has been this year under the current Board led by Michael Nicholson (World class at Hide and Seek) and his boss Dermot Desmond, whose Celtic legacy was considered on The Celtic Star last night.
Sutton continued: “For over a year, Celtic has been making mistakes and huge ones at that. I moaned last January about the sale of Kyogo Furuhashi, but even I can’t believe they couldn’t find a suitable replacement in two subsequent windows and sold Adam Idah in the process. You look at the striking options available to O’Neill right now and that has to be put into the category of borderline criminal.
Everyone has their own views on the departure of Brendan Rodgers and the sacking of Nancy, but, suffice to say, both of those managers were badly let down by the quality of player at their disposal. Recruitment has been awful. Mistakes from last summer were not rectified because the January business was woeful,” Sutton pointed out.
“Look at the teams that Martin has been picking over the past few weeks and that will give you an idea on what he thinks of those acquisitions. Joel Mvuka? Junior Adamu? Tomas Cvancara? There just hasn’t been the required impact from any of them.
“Fans have seen an erosion of a successful squad right in front of their eyes at the same time as money is bursting out of the club’s bank vault. It’s hard to quantify just how much work Celtic have to do to sort out this mess in the summer. It’s a herculean job,” the former Celtic striker posted out.
While you can argue with Sutton’s title assessment in our earlier article there is nothing at all in this that we can take issue with. He may be right about the Scottish Premiership title likely to end up elsewhere but there are games to play and we have turned things around in 1979, 1986 and 2008 when it was looking unlikely. We’ve also been guilty of throwing some titles that looked won away, like in 2005 and several others we could all mention.
It’s not over yet Chris. Unlikely maybe, but certainly not over.
Meanwhile it is certainly good to hear that Auston Trusty has got fire in his belly for the title run-in. Hopefully it is contagious because we are going to have to battle in every single remain match to deliver the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup double. That would be the sweetest thing given all that has happened, most of it self-inflicted.
