If Manchester United want to pursue their interest in German head coach Julian Nagelsmann, they may have to swat away competition from elsewhere in the Premier League.
Nagelsmann is one of United’s leading targets ahead of the summer’s managerial search, but it might not be as easy a coup as the club may wish.
One of Chelsea’s main targets to replace Graham Potter in April 2023 was Julian Nagelsmann, and it appears the club has retained an interest to this day.
While the German head coach is focused on the upcoming World Cup for now, Chelsea could be interested in Nagelsmann’s services after the tournament, as they still rate him highly, according to BILD.
Manchester United have held internal talks about Nagelsmann in the past months, as he is a name in with a strong chance at the permanent head coach job, should Michael Carrick not land the role.
Chelsea’s outside interest isn’t spectacular news for United, but they will believe that they hold an upper hand in the race for the 38-year-old’s signature.
Manchester United are closing in on UEFA Champions League qualification, which could be a huge factor in enticing Nagelsmann, if he is to move to England following the World Cup.
The Red Devils are currently nine points clear of sixth-place Brighton & Hove Albion, and could secure their spot in next season’s UCL lineup with positive results against Brentford and Liverpool.
If Nagelsmann has Chelsea and Manchester United to choose from, the clear favourites would be United, who are likely to have this place in Europe’s biggest competition in 2026/27.
As well as a better European placing, United are a club with a stronger transfer policy, focusing on signing Premier League-ready players rather than the scattergun approach Chelsea seem to have adopted.
A move is still far from taking place for either side, but it’s a battle to keep half an eye on going into a huge summer for both clubs.
