Chelsea player rated 7th best in the league has just one MOTM: that is an outrage

Chelsea put in a truly dire first half against Nottingham Forest on Saturday. We called it one of the worst we’ve seen all season, and that’s no exaggeration.

Romeo Lavia, Malo Gusto and Josh Acheampong all made mistakes at the back which Forest could easily have capitalised on, and further forward we were totally ineffectual. The team looked very slow and dozy, they couldn’t move the ball up the pitch at all and we were very worried by what we saw.

Midfield change turns the tide

What changed in that second half? Well you can point to a few different things, and plenty have noted that bringing on Marc Guiu to lead the line and allowing Joao Pedro to drop deeper was an influential change.

But all of that is beating around the bush, really. We all know that the most effective change Enzo Maresca made was taking off the ineffective Lavia and bringing on the machine Moises Caicedo.

Before long, Chelsea were one and then two goals up. Caicedo didn’t even have to have a huge influence on the game compared to usual, it all just played into our hands from the moment his intensity both on and off the ball was introduced.

Caicedo’s 7th place a real head scratcher

A look at the FotMob average rating of the season so far shows that he’s just 7th in the league overall. Ahead of him we’ve got Erling Haaland, Antoine Semenyo, Nordi Mukiele, Cody Gakpo, Jack Grealish and Bruno Ferndandes. Now we can understand that, to a degree – they’re all having great seasons.

What we can’t understand is how Caicedo can have just one player of the match award. Shouldn’t he have 4 or 5 already? We struggle to think of a game where he wasn’t the best Chelsea player, and few where the opposition had one better.
