This is a Chelsea predicted lineup for their Premier League tie with Newcastle United on May 11. This will be a pivotal clash in deciding who eventually finishes in the top five spots of the competition. Both sides are desperate to earn Champions League football and have some difficult matches to end the season so every point is important at this stage. The Blues to to rest and rotate a lot on Thursday when they pretty easily walked past Djurgarden so that could hint at who will start this time.
Rob Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen have been sharing goalkeeper duties. In defence, there’s a clear split between the first-choice and the secondary options. Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, Levi Colwill, and Trevoh Chalobah make up the primary back four. Malo Gusto, Benoit Badiashile, Tosin Adarabioyo, and Josh Acheampong can come in when needed to rest the main crew.
In midfield, Caicedo can play there with Reece James, Romeo Lavia, Enzo Fernandez, or Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. Up front there’s a few players being moved around as Cole Palmer, Jadon Sancho, Noni Madueke, Pedro Neto, Tyrique George, and Nicolas Jackson play across the front four. For the Conference League only, teenager Reggie Walsh started as an attacker but likely won’t feature in the league.
Enzo Maresca has been using his 4-2-3-1 base formation for most of the season. Against Djurgarden in the second leg he used some absolute blob with four full backs on the field at once, Cucurella possibly in midfield, and Walsh/Dewsbury-Hall popping up wherever needed up front. Google has it down as a 4-4-1-1 but that might be too simplified for what was actually on the field. Normally, the manager sets his team up with the 4-2-3-1 and it shifts in possession to a 2-2-5-1 of sorts with players ready to crash the box and win the ball back high.
The Blues are on a strong run of four wins in a row with only one defeat in their last ten outings. That only loss was in a dead rubber against Legia Warsaw and ultimately didn’t mean much, so the team’s momentum remains pretty strong. Defensively, clean sheets still aren’t the norm, but the side no longer let in a number of goals regularly and have in fact kept a clean sheet in half of their last ten fixtures. With their attack back firing they’ve been able to overcome any slight issues in defence by outscoring opponents or grinding out results with their possession-focused system.
Things are mostly quiet on the injury front with PremierInjuries being fairly static. Marc Guiu is still a doubt, Aaron Anselmino is out, Christopher Nkunku is out, and Wesley Fofana is out. Beyond that, Mykhailo Musryk is still suspended but otherwise every senior squad member is fit based on the latest information available.
