Millie Bright has just announced her retirement from football after a trophy laden 12 year spell with Chelsea.
It’s just been announced that Chelsea women captain Millie Bright is retiring from football with immediate effect.
Having joined the club in 2015, the defender went on to made 294 appearances for the Blues, as well as picking up 88 England caps.
Bright has not been able to play since February because of an ankle injury, but this is still a surprising announcement.
“Representing Chelsea over the last 12 years has been everything to me, but I’m now ready to say goodbye to playing football,” Bright said in an emotional video statement.
“I’ve given all I can, and I never wanted to fight for any other badge. It is now time, and I’m ready to go into a new era. I’m always going to be Chelsea, but just in a different way.”
The defender, in many ways the John Terry of the women’s team, has been at the heart of Chelsea’s rise to the top in the women’s game, and will forever be a legend of that side.
Chelsea have sent their first team on holiday for a few days because of the gap until Monday’s game against Nottingham Forest.
Player power at Chelsea has long been a problem, and according to one former player we’ve just seen a horrific example of it in full flow.
