Liverpool’s pursuit of Marc Guehi was one of the defining sagas of the summer transfer window, and the story may not be finished yet.
The England international came close to joining Arne Slot’s side in a £35M ($46.8M) deal , only for Crystal Palace to block the move at the final moment.

Reports claim Guehi had already completed a medical and was preparing for the switch when Palace abruptly withdrew. With no replacement lined up, and amid suggestions that manager Oliver Glasner threatened to resign if his captain was sold, the deal collapsed, leaving both Liverpool and the player frustrated.
Palace’s decision may have held for now, but it has thrown Guehi’s future into serious doubt. The 25-year-old’s contract expires in 2026, and with no extension on the horizon, Palace faces mounting pressure.
Crucially, from January, he will be eligible to negotiate and sign a pre-contract agreement with another club, paving the way for a free transfer the following summer.
That possibility is expected to draw interest from Europe’s elite, with Liverpool expected to circle again. Palace rejected a £70M ($93.7M) approach from Tottenham last winter before settling on a £35M ($46.8M) compromise with Liverpool this summer.
Yet the Reds may now prefer to wait until he enters the final six months of his contract, when Palace's leverage will be at an all-time low. From Liverpool’s perspective, the appeal is obvious. Guehi is entering his prime and is already a fixture at the Premier League and international level.
He would provide both depth and succession planning in a defense anchored by Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate. Slot is clearly keen to reinforce his back line as the club plans for life beyond Van Dijk.
What is clear is that Guehi has outgrown his current role at Selhurst Park and will continue to attract top-level attention until his future is resolved.
Whether Liverpool re-enters the race with a bid in January to fend off rival interest may depend on Palace’s willingness to finally cash in, and on whether tensions with Oliver Glasner have eased, before Europe’s heavyweights step in.
