Could Manchester City’s on loan Argentine midfielder make the grade at City?

Could Manchester City’s Argentine midfielder Maximo Perrone develop into a first contributor for the world champions? The youngster is currently on loan with La Liga side Las Palmas. While he didn’t make an immediate impact he has slowly worked his way into the season.

The Argentine midfielder was brought by the treble winners as a young prospect. He had caught the eye with Velez Sarsfield and City brought the midfielder in January last year. He immediately impressed Manchester City staff with his ability to play in the pockets. The Athletic reported that he is regarded alongside Phil Foden as one of the club’s better players in these positions. This ability is a prerequisite to play in a Pep Guardiola side. Ilkay Gundogan was a master of this during his glittering Manchester City career.

The major concern on Perrone’s play according to City staff was whether he is strong enough and quick enough to survive in the Premier League. Players of this type can thrive in the tough Premier League but it takes a special kind of player to do so. David Silva was one such player but with his technical ability and football IQ he became one of the Premier League’s greatest players during his time at Manchester City.

Perrone’s loan spell at Las Palmas began slowly. He featured mainly as a substitute during the early stages of the season. He has however begun starting in a deeper midfield role for the La Liga outfit. Given more opportunities, he has begun to show his immense quality and potential.

It may take time for the Argentine midfielder to develop into a Manchester City first-team prospect. But given how highly regarded he is at the club and how much he is developing this season he may make the grade in time.
