Cristiano Ronaldo officially releases former Manchester United midfielder

Cristiano Ronaldo is currently focused on Portugal’s FIFA World Cup campaign after helping his country reach the quarter-finals, scoring from the penalty spot in the Round of 32 victory over Croatia.

While the five-time Ballon d’Or winner continues chasing international glory, developments have also been taking place away from the tournament involving one of the clubs he has invested in.

Earlier this year, Cristiano Ronaldo completed the purchase of a 25 per cent stake in a Spanish club, with changes continuing behind the scenes as preparations are made for the 2026/27 season.

Another change has now been confirmed away from the World Cup as squad plans continue to take shape

UD Almeria have officially confirmed on their X account that Arnau Puigmal has left the club, bringing an end to his four-year spell after making 162 appearances in all competitions.

Puigmal will be a familiar name to Manchester United supporters after spending four years at Old Trafford between 2017 and 2021.

Although primarily a central midfielder, the Spaniard was also deployed at right-back during his time in United’s academy, while later featuring on the right wing and even as a striker during his spell with Almeria.

After leaving United upon the expiry of his contract in 2021, Puigmal joined Almeria on a free transfer and went on to become an important member of the squad. He also spent part of the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Elche before returning to establish himself once again.

Almeria’s farewell message thanked the 25-year-old for his service after 162 appearances.

They stated that his association with the club had officially come to an end before wishing him well for the future.

The departure comes shortly after Almeria confirmed the contract extension of experienced forward Leo Baptistao and the arrival of former Barcelona youngster Quim Junyent, as the club continues reshaping its squad ahead of the new campaign.

Puigmal now becomes a free agent and will begin searching for the next chapter of his career after ending a memorable spell in Spanish football.
