Tottenham Hotspur are entering into a new era with Daniel Levy bidding adieu to the North Londoners after 25 years in charge of the proceedings at Hotspur Way. And his exit might just open the door to the kind of marquee signings that the supporters at N17 have craved for a long time. And exit-bound Real Madrid winger Rodrygo could be the first test case.
Daniel Levy’s departure has left the Lilywhites faithful adjusting to life without the only chairman most have ever known. And he had a reputation for having a more cautious approach towards things. But it also came with criticism, given that the wage structure that he established at Hotspur Way has held the club back when it came to competing to bring world-class players through the doors.
Even with Levy in charge of proceedings at N17, the Lilywhites already flexed their muscles in the recently concluded summer transfer window. We saw the North Londoners spending big money this summer as Tottenham signed the likes of Mohammed Kudus, Joao Palhinha and Xavi Simons before going on to add Randal Kolo Muani on loan from PSG on the deadline day.
And if we look at each of those profiles, they end up being a big step up in quality in the current roster.
But then if you pick up Rodrygo, then he is on a different level entirely. And Tottenham offered around £87m in the summer to bring him to Hotspur Way. Thought we saw how the talks to bring him to N17 broke down over his wage demands, which were believed to be in the £350,000-a-week range. And paying someone that under Levy, that was unthinkable.
According to Football Insider, the North Londoners are now looking to increase their wage budget to bring in quality players. And this can end up being transformative for Tottenham. Now we don’t expect this to mean that the club will suddenly start throwing money like Manchester City or Chelsea, but this can at least make sure that the club can push to being in a high ceiling and get quality players that they have previously been priced out of.
And Rodrygo fits that bill perfectly.
Tottenham cannot afford to change the structure entirely, given how hard Levy has worked to establish a sense of stability there. But loosening the wage cap slightly to bring in someone with Rodrygo’s calibre is a risk worth taking. And while the Levy era at N17 was defined by caution, this post-Levy era has a chance to be defined by a sense of belief.
