David de Gea officially loses manager

David de Gea spent long enough at Manchester United to experience almost every version of the club’s post-Sir Alex Ferguson turbulence.

Signed from Atletico Madrid in 2011 as the long-term successor to Edwin van der Sar, the Spaniard initially struggled with the physical demands of English football before developing into one of United’s most important players.

He won the Premier League in Ferguson’s final season and then remained the club’s first-choice goalkeeper through years of managerial upheaval.

David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag all relied on De Gea.

Meanwhile he also remained between the posts during interim spells involving Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick and Ralf Rangnick.

At his best, De Gea repeatedly rescued United sides that were far less secure defensively than those Ferguson had built.

His reflex saves became a defining feature of several difficult seasons.

The final years were less comfortable.

As football moved towards goalkeepers being heavily involved in build-up play, questions grew over De Gea’s distribution and ability to play aggressively away from his line.

Despite winning the Premier League Golden Glove in his final campaign, mistakes in major matches and uncertainty over his contract meant his 12-year United spell ended quietly when his deal expired in 2023.

David de Gea sees another manager sacked

Fiorentina have now officially announced on their website that Fabio Grosso has been relieved of his duties as first-team coach.

The decision comes after an awful opening to the Serie A season, with De Gea’s side currently sitting bottom of the table after three matches.

Fiorentina were beaten 4-0 by Roma in their opening league fixture before suffering a 3-0 defeat against Frosinone.

Their latest outing brought another loss, this time 2-1 against Torino, leaving them without a point and with nine goals conceded already.

De Gea joined Fiorentina in 2024 after spending a year away from football following his United departure.

He has since re-established himself as a regular starter in Italy.

However, he now finds himself dealing with another managerial change after becoming extremely familiar with upheaval during his years at Old Trafford.
