David de Gea officially reunites with manager

David de Gea spent 12 years at Manchester United, long enough to work under almost every major manager of the turbulent post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Ferguson signed the Spaniard in 2011 and stayed patient through a difficult first season, when De Gea was still adapting to the physicality of English football.

That faith was eventually reward as United won the Premier League in Ferguson’s final campaign.

David Moyes inherited an established number one.

However, the club around De Gea deteriorated dramatically.

By the time Louis van Gaal arrived, the goalkeeper had become one of United’s most important players.

Van Gaal’s spell also brought the extraordinary collapsed Real Madrid transfer in 2015.

De Gea looked destined for the Bernabeu before paperwork problems stopped the move, leaving him to return to Old Trafford to reclaim his position.

Jose Mourinho then benefited from De Gea at arguably his peak.

The goalkeeper repeatedly rescued United with reflex saves, most memorably during a period when the defence often left him exposed.

Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, however, his position became less untouchable.

High-profile mistakes arrived and Dean Henderson eventually pushed seriously for his place, although Solskjaer continued publicly defended De Gea.

Erik ten Hag represented the final chapter.

De Gea remained first choice and won the Premier League Golden Glove in 2022/23.

However, his limitations in possession became harder to ignore within Ten Hag’s preferred style.

His contract then expired, ending one of United’s longest modern goalkeeper eras.

David de Gea officially gets new manager

De Gea has now been reunited with Paolo Vanoli at Fiorentina.

The Italian club officially confirmed on their website that Vanoli has been appointed as their new first-team coach.

Vanoli is returning to a club he previously represented as a player, having spent part of his career in Florence before later moving into coaching.

His appointment comes immediately after Fabio Grosso was dismissed following a disastrous start to the season.

For De Gea, it means another managerial change in Italy.

After being accustomed to managerial upheaval during his Manchester United career, the former Red Devils goalkeeper once again finds himself starting under a new boss.
