David Moyes singles out ‘best’ Tottenham star who made the difference vs Everton

Everton boss David Moyes has nothing but praise for Tottenham Hotspur star Guglielmo Vicario

They often say David De Gea could have saved the Titanic, Tottenham Hotspur star Guglielmo Vicario could very well now be in the same boat.

That line just about sums up Guglielmo Vicario’s heroics at Goodison Park on Sunday. Tottenham Hotspur’s Italian wall was simply unbeatable as Thomas Frank’s men cruised to a 3-0 victory over Everton, climbing back into the Premier League’s top four and handing the Toffees their first home defeat of the season.

While Micky van de Ven took the headlines with two perfectly-timed headers from corners, and Pape Matar Sarr added a third late on, even Everton boss David Moyes couldn’t look past Vicario’s brilliance between the posts. The Italian pulled off a series of world-class stops that preserved Spurs’ clean sheet and ensured their superb away run continued.

Moyes admitted to the BBC after the match (h/t TBR Football):

“Their keeper was probably their best player, and dealt with corners incredibly well. We played some good stuff, but could not get the goal we needed.”

Vicario Stands Tall as Spurs’ Defensive Backbone

From the opening whistle, Everton threw everything at Tottenham, but Vicario was a man possessed. His reflex save to deny Jack Grealish early on set the tone, and his command of the penalty area, especially under aerial pressure, kept the hosts at bay. Whether it was claiming dangerous crosses or reacting sharply to deflections, the 29-year-old looked untouchable.

The clean sheet marked Vicario’s fourth of the season, and arguably his best display yet in a Spurs shirt. It was also a powerful response to critics who pointed to his minor blunder against Leeds earlier in the campaign. Frank has stood firmly by his keeper, and performances like this prove why, Vicario isn’t just reliable; he’s redefining Tottenham’s defensive confidence.

Tarkowski Joins the Praise

It wasn’t just Moyes who noticed. Everton captain James Tarkowski echoed his manager’s sentiments after the final whistle, admitting that Vicario’s saves stopped the Toffees from taking control in the first half. He said:

“If it wasn’t for Vicario’s good work, we could’ve been in front at half-time.”

Tottenham, meanwhile, were ruthless at both ends, Rodrigo Bentancur’s pinpoint deliveries, Van de Ven’s aerial power, and Vicario’s command of his box showed that this Spurs team now possesses something their rivals often lack: balance. The same set-piece drills that earned goals also relied on Vicario’s composure to snuff out Everton’s counter-threats.

When rival managers start calling your goalkeeper the best player on the pitch, you know you’ve got something special. Guglielmo Vicario has quietly become one of Tottenham’s most important players, a blend of agility, bravery, and calm that gives Frank’s side an elite foundation.

It’s fitting that, in a season where Spurs are evolving tactically, the man at the back is setting the tone for the entire team. If Vicario keeps performing at this level, Tottenham’s hopes of chasing trophies, and silencing doubters, might not sink at all. In fact, he may just be the one keeping this ship unsinkable.
