Manchester United continue to retain faith in Ruben Amorim despite inconsistent results

Manchester United are going through a tense situation under Ruben Amorim currently, even after registering a 2-1 victory against Chelsea in the Premier League at Old Trafford. The win might have eased the pressure on the manager a bit, but his record of just eight wins in 31 league games since his appointment as United manager in November 2024 is a definite cause of concern for everyone.

The Red Devils finished 15th in the league table in the 2024/25 season, which was the lowest league finish for the club since 1973-74. Now, with just two wins from the first five games in the league, United are 10th in the points table, and have not shown any sign of consistency so far. The manager has been adamant about using his 3-4-2-1 formation, which has clearly not worked, and hence, amidst these scenarios, reports reveal that Manchester United are considering Oliver Glasner as a potential replacement.

Why is the board still holding back?

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has reported to Football Insider that the Red Devils are still not sacking Amorim due to financial as well as strategic reasons. The club hired him as an emergency signing by sacking Ten Hag mid-season, and sacking the Portuguese manager right now will repeat that pattern in the very next season.

Moreover, the board has backed Amorim with expensive signings in the summer transfer window of 2025, and hence, they will demand progress from the manager as he has received the signings as per his wish. The journalist also stated that the club is also mindful of the potential financial loss as sacking Amorim will likely cost in excess of double-digit millions, a figure that could affect PSR and FFP compliance. Meanwhile, reports reveal that Manchester United are eyeing a Bosman move for Frenkie de Jong in 2026, which adds further weight to the need for financial caution.

“The club went and spent big to get Amorim, and spent big to sack Erik ten Hag, so they want to stick with their man. They don’t want to have to sack him right now; they want to give him time to try and get things right. They backed him in the transfer window with several big-money signings as well, so they want to give him time to see if he can improve.

“The other thing you have to look at is that it will cost Man United a lot of money now to sack Amorim. He’s under a long-term contract, and United don’t really want to do that, having done that in the past, when they’ve been getting rid of managers, it has cost them a lot of money financially. And especially with PSR and FFP, you can’t really go out and afford to sack managers costing you whatever double figures in millions.”

Should the club make a change now?

Many fans ask whether it is time to end Amorim’s reign, but the situation is not straightforward. On one hand, his inflexible system and dismal return of just eight wins in 31 league games make the frustration understandable. The squad appears top-heavy with attacking midfielders yet worryingly short in key positions, particularly defensive midfield and goalkeeper.

The system does not match the balance of the team. On the other hand, research into mid-season managerial changes indicates they often only produce a short-term bounce, which quickly fades. United have already endured constant turbulence since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, and once again, changing managers could worsen the lack of stability.

Dismissing Amorim now would not only create more upheaval but also cost around £12 million in compensation before November. This is a significant figure in the current situation. Allowing him until the January window provides a fair period to adapt tactics and assess progress with possible reinforcements. If the club continues to stagnate by then, the board needs to revisit the decision, but the board has to show patience for now, especially considering the risks of disruption both financially and structurally.
