Manchester United’s recruitment strategy has increasingly focused on emerging youth talent – particularly players capable of making an impact both immediately and long term.

One such attacker has already generated transfer intrigue in recent weeks.

We exclusively revealed that talks had taken place over a potential move for Mateus Mane to Manchester United, placing him firmly on the radar ahead of the summer window.

More recently,  the Wolves wonderkid added further intrigue to the rumours after reposting a TikTok video from a United supporter captioned “bring him in” alongside the hashtag “manchesterunited” – a move that did not go unnoticed by fans.

Now, the situation surrounding his future has taken another twist – this time on international stage.

According to BBC Sport, Mateus Mane is at the centre of a tug of war between England and Portugal over his international allegiance.

The 18-year-old forward, currently playing in the Premier League with Wolverhampton Wanderers, has represented England at Under-18 level but was born in Barreiro, Portugal.

Portugal manager Roberto Martinez is said to be keen to fast-track him into the setup, while England’s pathway remains open.

Sources cited by BBC Sport indicate no final decision has yet been made, with the player focused primarily on club form amid Wolves’ difficult campaign.

The situation mirrors other recent nationality decisions involving players linked to Old Trafford.

United defender Ayden Heaven, for example, opted not to switch allegiance to Ghana and instead continue with England, hoping to push toward senior recognition under Thomas Tuchel.

For Mateus Mane, who has played in attack and in midfield for Premier League strugglers Wolves, the coming months could prove pivotal both domestically and internationally.

With transfer speculation ongoing and two nations vying for his commitment, his next move – on and off the pitch – will be closely watched.
