England officially hire Michael Carrick’s brother as coach

Michael Carrick has enjoyed a remarkable relationship with Manchester United, first as a player and now as the man trusted to lead the club from the dugout.

The former midfielder spent 12 years at Old Trafford.

He became one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s most reliable players and won five Premier League titles alongside the 2008 Champions League.

His intelligence in possession and ability to control games made him an understated but vital part of United’s most successful eras.

Carrick has since built a strong reputation as a coach.

Across his two spells in charge of United, including his brief caretaker stint in 2021, he has lost just three of 23 competitive matches.

That record helped convince the club to keep faith in him after he guided United back into the Champions League last season.

The new campaign has brought mixed results.

United opened with an embarrassing 2-0 defeat away to newly-promoted Hull City before responding emphatically with a 5-2 win over Ipswich Town.

A dramatic 2-2 draw at Everton followed, with United conceding a late equaliser after appearing set to leave with all three points.

Carrick’s attention now turns to Europe.

Sabah FK visit Old Trafford on Thursday for United’s first Champions League fixture since 2023.

However, the Carrick name has now also been handed a fresh role within the England setup.

England appoint brother of Michael Carrick

The England Football Association have officially confirmed that Michael Carrick’s younger brother, Graeme Carrick, will work as an assistant coach with England’s Under-17s during the 2026/27 season.

Barry Lewtas will lead the age group, with Carrick joining him alongside Matt Thorpe and goalkeeping coach Matt Doyle.

Graeme already has substantial coaching experience of his own.

He previously spent around 15 years working within the FA before returning to Newcastle United, where he later took charge of their Under-18 side.

He then reunited professionally with Michael at Middlesbrough in 2024, joining his brother’s first-team staff after Aaron Danks departed for Bayern Munich.

That experience means Graeme is far more than simply the brother of United’s manager, with his latest England appointment another significant step in his coaching career.
