Rumours continue to swirl around a potential move for Chelsea and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
According to reports, Real Madrid scouts watched his recent performance against Liverpool and left convinced that he’s the missing piece they need.
Enzo Maresca will be keen to hold on to the 24-year-old, who has become an important part of Chelsea’s attack this season.
The Argentine has already found the net three times in seven Premier League matches, highlighting his growing influence under the new manager.
Maresca doesn’t have much to worry about at the moment. Fernandez hasn’t exactly made it clear he wants a move to the Santiago Bernabeu.
While Real Madrid’s interest in Fernandez has been widely reported, journalist Mark Brus recently told Daily Briefing that the Argentine midfielder has not expressed any intention of leaving Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea may have to face Nottingham Forest without Fernandez this weekend. The midfielder is currently dealing with an injury that could rule him out of Saturday’s match at City Ground.
With Dario Essugo already sidelined and Andrey Santos missing the win over Liverpool, losing Fernandez would be another headache for Maresca as his squad depth continues to be tested.
Chelsea have previously lost Eden Hazard, Thibaut Courtois and Antonio Rudiger to Real Madrid.
In both Hazard and Courtois’s cases, the moves happened as they neared the end of their contracts, while Rudiger left as a free agent. There wasn’t much Chelsea could do in those situations.
Things are different with Fernandez. The World Cup winner is signed until 2032, giving the club plenty of control over his future.
Even if things change, the Conference League holders appear to have backup options in mind. According to journalist Simon Phillips, Kobbie Mainoo is one of four Premier League midfielders on Chelsea’s radar as potential replacements for Fernandez.
Still, with such a long contract in place, it would be surprising to see the former Benfica man leave Stamford Bridge anytime soon.
