Erik ten Hag blocking Barcelona transfer

Manchester United fans will need no reminding of the man now standing in Barcelona’s way of a summer signing.

Erik ten Hag spent three years at Old Trafford, arriving in 2022 with a reputation built on Eredivisie titles at Ajax and leaving United’s supporters cautiously optimistic that a period of stability had finally arrived.

Silverware did follow, with an FA Cup and League Cup added to the cabinet, but results grew increasingly unpredictable and Erik ten Hag was ultimately dismissed in October 2024 following a poor start to that season.

His next role, at Bayer Leverkusen, lasted barely longer than a pre-season, with the Dutchman removed after just three competitive matches and a single point collected from games against Hoffenheim and Werder Bremen.

That swift exit left Ten Hag searching for a way back into the game, and rather than jump straight into another dugout, he instead took a technical director role at FC Twente.

It is in that capacity that he has now blocked a move from Barcelona for Twente’s 18-year-old defender Ruud Nijstad.

The Catalan club had contacted Twente directly over Nijstad, whom they view as an ideal fit for their long-standing search for a ball-playing left-sided centre-back.

According to Voetbal International, Barcelona are understood to have been immediately rebuffed, with Ten Hag slamming the door shut on any deal and making clear his intention to keep it closed.

A fresh bid from Barcelona in the coming days has not been ruled out, though Ten Hag’s stance is understood to remain unmoved for now.

What has surprised many in Dutch football is just how hands-on Ten Hag has become in Twente’s day-to-day first-team operation, despite technically stepping away from coaching duties.

Those who worked under him at Old Trafford will recognise the trait, with Ten Hag long known for a meticulous, hands-on approach that extended well beyond simply picking the team on matchdays.

Nijstad has emerged as one of the most promising young defenders in the Eredivisie this season, having broken into Twente’s first team over the past year.

His composure on the ball and reading of the game have drawn comparisons to the type of defender Ten Hag himself favoured during his time managing United, where he consistently pushed for centre-backs comfortable building play from the back.

Barcelona’s search for that profile has intensified in recent weeks, with the club also linked to a specialist left-footed centre-back as they look to reshape Hansi Flick’s defensive options.
