Villa scored either side of the half-time interval through Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins before late goals from Jonathan Rowe and Watkins, but Football Italia’s Man of the Match was Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans, for a strong midfield display and assist for Konsa’s opener and Watkins’ late goal.

Bologna 1-3 Aston Villa – Player Ratings

Bologna: Ravaglia 5; Mario 5.5, Lucumi 7, Heggem 5, Miranda 6.5; Ferguson 6 (Orsolini 6), Freuler 6, Pobega 6 (Moro 6); Bernardeschi 6.5, Castro 5.5 (Odgaard N/A), Rowe 8

Best Bologna player: Jonathan Rowe – The English winger was by far the most dangerous of Bologna’s forwards tonight and was denied a couple of times by an alert Emiliano Martinez before eventually finding the back of the net at the end of the game. Rowe continues to impress in Rossoblu

Lowest Bologna rating: Federico Ravaglia – Completely to blame for Villa’s opening goal, missing the ball from Tielemans and allowing Konsa a free header. Did not look entirely comfortable but once Villa’s lead was established, he had significantly less to do.

Coach: Vincenzo Italiano 6.5 – Unlucky really. His team put in a performance to be proud of but unfortunately the scoreline did not quite reflect it and the coach has it all to do in the second leg in England.

Aston Villa: Martinez 6; Cash 6, Konsa 7.5, Torres 6.5, Digne 6; Onana 6.5 (Bogarde 6), Tielemans 8.5; McGinn 6, Rogers 6 (Maatsen N/A), Buendia 7 (Bailey N/A); Watkins 8

Best Aston Villa player: Youri Tielemans – Controlled the middle of the park and assisted two of Villa’s three goals. A really competent display from the talented Belgian.

Lowest Aston Villa rating: John McGinn – Relatively quiet night for the Scottish midfielder, out on the wing. Had little impact on the game compared to his teammates.

Coach: Unai Emery 7.5 – Continues to show why the Europa League is known as his tournament. Set up his side to absorb the pressure from Bologna and the game fell right into his lap after his side picked up a quick 2-0 lead before the hour mark.
